Ontario Civil Liberties Association

The Ontario Civil Liberties Association or OCLA is a non-profit organization, in Ontario, which defends freedom of expression and civil liberties, and opposes institutional policies and decisions that remove from the individual his or her personal liberty or exclude the individual from participation in the democratic functions of society.
OCLA was created as the first provincial civil liberties association for Ontario in 2013,〔(L'Association ontarienne des libertés civiles voit le jour ), ''Ici Radio-Canada'', January 23, 2013.〕 and was endorsed by Noam Chomsky as: "I am very pleased to learn of the Ontario Civil Liberties Association, and wish it the greatest success in its work, which could not be more timely and urgent as elementary civil rights, including freedom of speech, are under attack in much of the world, not excluding the more free and democratic societies.", and other leading civil rights advocates.
OCLA has four (Executive Members ) and a nine-member (Advisory Board ). OCLA's founding and present Executive Director is Joseph Hickey. Mr. Hickey holds BSc and MSc degrees in physics, and is a PhD candidate in the Complexity Science Group, University of Calgary. His thesis research is the theoretical physics of legal decision making.
OCLA is called to intervene in the public discourse on civil liberties, and on behalf of complainants,〔(Toronto Mayor John Tory to introduce motion to end carding in the city ), ''The Globe & Mail'', July 7, 2015.〕〔(Ontario’s gvmt, laws, and judges biased against pro-life cause: Civil Liberties Association ), ''Life Site'', May 1, 2015.〕〔(THE FREEDOM TO JEST: PROTECTING OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO PARODY AND SATIRE ), ''Friends of Canadian Broadcasting'', April 7, 2015.〕〔(Watchdog dismisses two complaints against Ottawa police ), ''Ottawa Citizen'', April 3, 2015.〕 has various (public campaigns ), and gives an (annual civil liberties award ).〔(Canada: Dominatrix given civil liberties award ), ''BBC News'', October 22, 2014.〕
